The elementary gifted program differentiates the curriculum components of content, process and product. GATEWAY classes provide accelerated instruction and enrichment through activities that both extend the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) and focus on content in other areas of student interest.
STEM/STEAM/Pi DaySTEM in an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. (STEAM is the acronym that includes Art). STEM/STEAM activities encourage critical thinking, collaboration, and problem solving, while the teacher serves as a facilitator.
According to the US Department of Commerce, STEM/STEAM occupations are growing at twice the rate of non-STEM occupations. Therefore, our students must be prepared in these content areas if they are to excel in their future endeavors. At the elementary level, STEM/STEAM activities are woven into the GATEWAY curriculum. Students utilize the engineering design process to reason like scientists, solve problems like mathematicians and create like inventors and artists in the real-world. Students in grades 3-5 will be planning, developing, and leading stations at the annual Pi Day event in March. Each station focuses on STEAM and provides an activity (make & take it, demonstration, hands-on experience) connected to a business/community sponsor. |
